The Covid dilemma: holding more than one truth at once

We tend to want things to be clear. Right or wrong. Safe or unsafe. True or false.
But most of life doesn’t work that way.
There is often more overlap than separation. More nuance than certainty.
The pandemic brought that into focus in a very real way. It pushed many people to question how they live, what they believe, and how they make decisions. Health, relationships, work, community—everything felt closer, more immediate, and at times harder to make sense of.
It wasn’t only about information. It was about how to hold that information. How to stay grounded while things felt unclear. How to think critically without becoming rigid. How to stay open without losing discernment.
It is possible to hold more than one perspective at once.
You can question systems and still respect science. You can care about your health in a holistic way and still value medical expertise. You can be thoughtful and skeptical without becoming reactive or extreme.
You can make careful choices without being driven by fear.
You can hold convictions and still remain curious.
These are not contradictions. They are part of thinking more fully.
The pandemic was not only a global health crisis. It was also a test of how we think, respond, and relate to one another. It asked for more than information. It asked for judgment, humility, and responsibility.
It highlighted how interconnected things really are. Not just physically, but socially and emotionally as well.
What one person does affects others. What one group believes can influence many.
There is discomfort in not having clear answers. In sitting with uncertainty. In allowing things to be unresolved for a while.
But that discomfort can also be useful.
It can slow us down enough to think more carefully. To listen more closely. To question our own assumptions, not just those of others.
Instead of rushing to conclusions, we can stay with the questions a little longer.
Maybe the real shift is not in choosing one side or another.
Maybe it is in learning how to hold multiple truths at once, without collapsing into certainty or confusion.
To think clearly, but not rigidly. To stay open, but not ungrounded. To act with care, even when the full picture is not available.
That kind of thinking may be less comfortable, but it is often more honest.
